About Panjab University
Established for the first time in Lahore in 1882, Panjab University (also referred to as Punjab University) is one of the oldest educational institutions in India. It was shifted to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in 1956, and ever since, it has been trailing distinction in teaching and research in subjects such as science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing sports and arts. It encourages enhancement in academic programmes and endorses superiority in research, teaching and scholarship.
The University is dedicated to drawing the brightest students and recruiting faculty of high calibre. Several students and faculty from India and abroad have been attracted to the University as it some great illustrious scientists and academicians in the faculties of humanities and arts. With the passage of time, the status of Panjab University has matured to being a ground-breaking educational institute, from being merely an educational institute.
For nearly a decade after 1947, there were several problems that the University had to face. First of all, the University was unable to perform as it did not have a campus to call its own. Then it was tough to carry out administration and the path was strewn with difficulties as the administrative office was in Solan and the teaching departments were in Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar. Till 1966 when Punjab was re-organized, the regional centers were in Jalandhar, Rohtak and Shimla and partner colleges were in HP, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. After the reorganization of Punjab, the University provided for the states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Union Territory of Chandigarh. Currently, the University is looked after by the administration of Chandigarh and the State Government of Punjab.
The University has 75 departments for research and development, training and education, and 15 centres and chairs for the same. It is associated with 188 colleges across Punjab and has a rural regional centre in Kuoni, three regional centres in Chandigarh, Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur.
Located in the quiet environs of Sectors 14 and Sectors 25 in Chandigarh, the University grounds cover 550 acres with Sector 14 housing the study centres, the offices, a health and recreation centre, hostels and houses allocated to the staff of the University. The impressive red sandstone campus was designed by the well-known French architect Pierre Jeanerette under the guidance of the celebrated Le Corbusier.
Panjab University is equipped with a fantastic and complete library which is called the Central A C Joshi Library. Inundated with rare books from the 19th century, the number goes up to 6.9 lakhs volumes of which 1.25 lakhs are magazines and journals. The library has the goal of offering services which competently fulfill the requirements of the professors and lecturers, the undergraduate and graduate scholars and the employees of the University community. The helpful and knowledgeable librarians provide expert assistance which is more than the usual facilitation offered by the regular information desks.
